The
first Mt Isa deposits were discovered in 1923 by the prospector, John
Campbell Miles, who gave Mt Isa its name - a corruption of Mt Ida.
Mt Isa Mines was founded in 1924 but it was during and
after WWII that Mt Isa really took off, and today it's the Western world's
biggest silver and lead producer. The ore is transported 900km to Townsville
by rail.
