La région du sud-est de l' État du South Australia, était habiter depuis très longtemps par les aborigènes Kaurnas, jusqu'au jour, où le bateau Hollandais de Peter Nuyts arriva sur la côte en 1627.
L'état fut fondé par des colons libres et non des bagnards. Plus tard en 1836 le capitaine britanique John Hindmarsh, debout sous un hévéa proclama la fondation de la nouvelle colonnie. Vous pouvez voir aujourd'hui dans McFarlane Street cet arbre.

En 1857, le Parlement opta pour une constitution et une démocracie avancés pour l'époque. Une réforme, l'enseignement gratuit et le vote des femmes (2ème au monde). Dans le domaine du développement urbain le colonel William Light, superviseur général de South Australia, On choisit un projet de quadrillage, un plan carré d'un mile de côté délimité par de grandes avenues, entouré d'une ceinture de pars et de jardins sur plusieurs centaines de mètres ce qui facilite de trouver son chemin pour tout le monde. Ce modéle à été repris par certaines villes du pays.
Adelaide s'est fait connaître de 1985 à 1996 avec le Grand Prix automobile de Formule 1, son départ pour Melbourne à été dououreux pour Adelaide.

  The Old Ghan Today - Le Train légendaire
The original narrow gauge railway is closed and most of the original track has been removed.
However approximately 25 kilometres are still maintained for the Old Ghan train and museums are located 10km south of Alice Springs at the MacDonnell Siding. There is a 1930's style railway station built from the plans originally intended for Stuart (Alice Springs). The dispay area includes the station, a museun, a souvenir shop, tea rooms and restored carriages and locomotives.
In 1878 work began on the Great Northern Railway which was to cross the middle of Australia from Port Augusta to Darwin. The Southern section of the line finally reached Alice Spings in 1929 and the train that ran on this line became known as The Ghan. The Ghan was named after the Afghan camel drivers who had contributed to the development of communication and transports links in inland Australia. After the Old Ghan ceased running, it was replaced by the Legendary Ghan now travels to Alice Springs on a standard gauge railway from Adelaide via Tarcoola, west of the old track.
